Abstract: There are various rationality constraints---norms---governing belief formation and revision. For instance, one ought to respect the laws of logic and probability theory; under some circumstances, one ought to accept another person's testimony, under some others one ought not; etc. What explains why an epistemic agent is subject to these norms? Constitutivism holds that this is to be explained by appeal to norms that are constitutive of beliefs. Like the game of chess which is constituted by its rules, belief has certain norms that constitute it and this explains why someone who forms belief is necessarily subject to these norms. This is a strategy that is also employed in other areas of philosophy such as meta-ethics, linguistics, and philosophy of mind. This talk will raise some questions about this strategy. In particular, I will argue that there are two types of norms that play distinct roles in the specification and evaluation of options and I will consider how, and even whether, these norms can give rise to genuine normative requirements.
